1 tbsp green moong dal (split green gram) , washed and drained

  1. To make palak dal soup for babies and toddler, combine the spinach, green moong dal and ¾ cup of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  2. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
  3. Cool slightly and blend in a mixer till smooth.
  4. Transfer the mixture into a deep non-stick pan and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  5. Serve the palak dal soup for babies and toddler lukewarm.

  2. Green moong dal used in this soup is easy to digest. But ensure that you have served moong dal individually to your baby before combining it with palak. 
  3. In the beginning months you can blend the soup very well and strain it if required. Gradually as the baby grows, avoid straining. 
  4. Since the soup is for babies who are 8 months and above, no salt has been added. Most pediatricians now-a-days do not recommend salt till the age of 1 year. Please consult your pediatrician before adding salt to your baby’s food. 
  5. All the equipment, feeding bowls and spoons must be well-sterilized before using.

  1. To make Palak Moong Dal Soup for Babies and Toddler, first For Spinach and Mint Juice, first choose spinach that has vibrant deep green leaves and stems with no signs of yellowing. The leaves should look fresh and tender, and not be wilted or bruised. Avoid those that have a slimy coating as this is an indication of decay.   2. Then wash the spinach leaves with water to get rid of any dirt. 
  3. Shred the spinach leaves with the help of a sharp sterilized knife. Keep aside.

  5. Drain the excess water using a strainer and discard it. 
  6. Transfer the washed and drained moong dal into a clean pressure cooker. 
  7. Add the shredded spinach to it. 
  8. Add ¾ cup of water for cooking and mix with a ladle. 
  9. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Let the steam escape completely before opening the lid of the pressure cooker.

  11. Transfer the mixture into the jar of a mixer. 
  12. Blend till really smooth. Ensure that no vegetable pieces remain after blending, as that can lead to choking in babies.

    1/4 cup finely chopped spinach (palak) 2 tbsp masoor dal (split red lentil) , soaked for 15 minutes and drained minutes and drained
    1/2 tsp ghee
    1/4 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
    a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
    2 tbsp finely chopped onions
    1/4 tsp ginger-garlic (adrak-lehsun) paste
    a pinch of turmeric powder (haldi)
    a pinch of chilli powder
    restricted quantity of salt (optional)

    1. Combine the masoor dal and ½ cup of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.  
    2. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid. Keep aside.
    1. Heat the ghee in a deep non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds and asafoetida.
    2. When the seeds crackle, add the onions and ginger-garlic paste and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds.
    3. Add the spinach, turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute, while stirring occasionally.
    4. Add the cooked dal, mash well with a potato masher and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
      Serve lukewarm.
