Ingredients


For Cabbage Moong Dal Khichdi For Babies and Toddlers
1/4 cup finely chopped cabbage
2 tbsp green moong dal (split green gram) , washed and drained
2 tbsp rice (chawal) , washed and drained
1/2 tsp ghee
1/4 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
a pinch of turmeric powder (haldi)
restricted quantity of salt

Method

  1. To make cabbage moong dal khichdi for babies and toddlers, combine the rice, moong dal and 1 cup of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  2. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
  3. Heat the ghee in a broad non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds.
  4. When the cumin seeds crackle, add the asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for 5 seconds.
  5. Add the cabbage and sauté on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes or till the cabbage turns soft.
  6. Add the cooked dal-rice mixture, turmeric powder and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  7. Cool the cabbage moong dal khichdi for babies and toddlers slightly and serve lukewarm.

Choose cabbage heads that are firm and dense with shiny, crisp, colorful leaves free of cracks, bruises and blemishes. Severe damage to the outer leaves is suggestive of worm damage or decay that may reside in the inner core as well, so do not buy it. 
  2. Wash the cabbage very well with clean water to make it free of dirt if any. Wash it under running water to prevent any sort of contamination.

  20. Add salt in restricted quantities if your baby is above 1 year. For infants below 1 year prefer to avoid adding salt. 
  21. Mix all the ingredients for Cabbage Moong Dal Khichdi for Babies and Toddlers well using a ladle and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring once in between. Also mash the khichdi to the required conssistency and texture your baby likes it.

    1 1/2 tbsp peeled and grated bottle gourd (doodhi / lauki) 2 tbsp peeled and grated carrot
    2 tbsp rice (chawal) , washed and drained
    2 tbsp green moong dal (split green gram) , washed and drained
    1/2 tsp ghee
    1/4 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
    a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
    clove (laung / lavang)
    black peppercorn (kalimirch)
    a pinch of turmeric powder (haldi)

    For Serving
    fresh curd , preferably made from cow's milk
    1. Heat the ghee in a pressure cooker and add the cumin seeds.
    2. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida, clove, peppercorn, bottle gourd, carrot, green moong dal, rice, turmeric powder and 1¼ cups of water, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
    3. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
    4. When it is done, remove the peppercorn and clove. Mash the khichdi a little with the back of a spoon.
    5. Serve lukewarm with fresh curds.

    1 tbsp green moong dal (split green gram)
    1 tbsp rice (chawal)
    1/8 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
    1/2 tsp ghee

    1. Wash and soak the green moong dal and rice in enough water for 15 minutes. Drain and keep aside.
    2. Combine the green moong dal, rice, turmeric powder and 1 cup of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
    3. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
    4. Mash the khichdi very well using a potato masher.
    5. Add the ghee and mix well.
    6. Serve the moong dal khichdi for babies lukewarm.

    1 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
    4 tbsp curd (dahi) , preferably made with cow’s
    2 tbsp rice (chawal) , washed and drained
    1/2 tsp ghee
    1/4 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
    a pinch of asafoetida (hing) 
     

    1. To make curd rice for babies and toddlers, heat the ghee in a broad non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds.
    2. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida and rice and sauté on a medium flame for a minute.
    3. Add approx. 1 cup of water and mix well. Cover it with a lid and cook on a medium flame for 10 to 12 minutes or till the rice is overdone, all the water has been evaporated and it can be easily mashed, while stirring occasionally.
    4. Cool the rice slghtly, add the curds and coriander and coarsely blend it in a mixer.
    5. Serve the curd rice for babies and toddlers immediately.
