Preparation Time:    Baking Time:  25 minutes   Baking Temperature:  200°C (400°F)   Cooking Time:    Total Time:     Makes 12 sticks

  1. Combine the yeast, sugar and 2 tbsp of warm water in a small bowl, mix well and cover it with a lid and keep aside for 10 minutes.
  2. Combine the whole wheat flour, salt and the yeast-sugar mixture in a deep bowl and knead it into soft dough using enough warm water.
  3. Add 1 tsp of olive oil and knead again till smooth.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp muslin cloth and keep aside in a warm place for 45 minutes or till the dough rises.
  5. Dust a clean dry surface with little plain flour, put the dough over it and pat it lightly with your fingers to shape into a rectangle of 200 mm. (8”) x 125 mm. (5”) and do not knead at all.
  6. Cut it into 12 equal portions using a dusted sharp knife.
  7. Take a portion and roll it lightly on the surface without using any whole wheat flour into a long roll of 250 mm. (10”) each.
  8. Repeat step 7 with the remaining portions.
  9. Place all the rolled portions on a baking tray lined with butter paper.
  10. Bake them in a pre-heated oven at 200°c (400°f) for 20 minutes.
  11. Brush all the bread sticks with the remaining ½ tsp of olive oil evenly over them.
  12. Cool slightly and serve or store in an air-tight container. Use as required

Hi Tarla hi, I have tried making this recipe 3 times but every single time it is not completely crispy. The inside of the stick is not crunchy. I have even tried to cook it longer but it still doesn’t work and the bottom side on the tray gets over cooked. Please help.

   Hi Akansha, Bread stick should be rolled very well that is very important, the oven should be pre heated well and then baked and do not forget to line the tray with buter paper. Or you can also bake at 180 and see as each oven is very different...

Hi Tarlaji, today tried whole wheat bread sticks..I added 1/4 th cup jowar flour and 1/4 th cup oats flour to 1/2 cup whole wheat flour.It turned out perfect...superb receipe also tried cheese sticks...wonderful..reminded me of cheeseling biscuits...Thanks a lot..I am looking forward to try more receipes.

Whole wheat bread sticks.. Wow.. this recipe is easy to make.. i have made this in bulk, and have stored it.. it is nice and crispy in taste.. goes well with soups and salads..
