1 cup toovar (arhar) dal
1/2 cup groundnuts
250 gms french beans , chopped
3 carrot , chopped
2 potatoes , peeled and chopped
250 gms bottle gourd (doodhi / lauki) , peeled and chopped
1/4 cup tamarind (imli) water
6 to 7 curry leaves (kadi patta)

To Be Roasted and Grounded Into A Smooth Paste
1/2 cup whole dry kashmiri red chillies
1 cup coriander (dhania) seeds
1/2 cup chana dal (split bengal gram)
1/2 cup urad dal (split black lentils)
1/2 tsp poppy seeds (khus-khus)
6 to 7 peppercorns (kalimirch)
1/2 cup dessicated coconut
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)

  1. Pressure cook the dal in salted water and with a pinch of turmeric till it turns soft and the dal is cooked.
  2. Whisk and keep aside.
  3. In another deep pan, boil enough water, add the vegetables and salt, mix well and boil and cook till the vegetables turn soft.
  4. Add the paste, mix well and bring to a boil.
  5. Add the tamarind juice, salt and curry leaves, mix well and boil for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Season with mustard seeds and asafoetida.
  7. Serve hot with rice and papad.
