500 gms bottle gourd (doodhi / lauki) , cut into thin strips

To Be Grounded Into A Smooth Paste
4 green chillies , chopped
1 tbsp soaked chana dal (split bengal gram)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1/4 tsp coriander (dhania) powder
4 tbsp freshly grated coconut
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)

Other Ingredients
4 to 5 curry leaves (kadi patta)
salt to taste
2 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
curd 1/4 cup

  1. Boil the bottle gourd till soft, but do not pressure cook it.
  2. Add the ground masala and salt, mix well and bring to boil.
  3. Add the curry leaves and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Heat the oil in a small pan and add the mustard seeds.
  5. When the seeds crackle, add this to the bottle gourd and remove from the flame.
  6. Add the curds, mix well and serve immediately.
