The Vegetable Idli is a beautiful potpourri of flavours, colours and textures, which your child is sure to enjoy.


The soothing taste of coconut milk together with the fresh flavour of vegetables is enough to make this idli variant a runaway hit with kiddos.


A soft and safe food, this is not likely to choke babies of 10-12 months’ age. So, you can cut these idlis into strips and serve them attractively, so your baby will try to feed herself – a necessary life-skill that must be initiated from this wee age itself!

  1. Wash and soak the parboiled rice and urad dal together in enough water in a deep bowl for at least 2 hours.
  2. Drain well, add the coconut milk and blend in a mixer to a smooth paste.
  3. Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl, add the carrot, onions, cabbage, cumin seeds, coconut and salt and mix well. Cover with a lid and keep aside to ferment in a warm place for 3 to 4 hours.
  4. Pour spoonfuls of the batter into the greased idli moulds and steam in a steamer for 10 to 12 minutes or till they are done.
  5. Serve hot with corn sambhar.

For the batter of Vegetable Idlis for Babies

  1. For the Vegetable Idli for Babies and Toddlers, combine the rice and urad dal in a deep bowl and wash it using clean water. 
  2. Drain the excess water using a strainer and discard it.
  3. Add more water for soaking. 
  4. Cover with a lid and keep aside for 2 hours to soak. 
  5. Again drain the water using a strainer. 
  6. Transfer the rice and urad dal into a mixer jar. 
  7. Add coconut milk to it. This will help in blending and making the mixture smooth. 
  8. Add 1 cup of water for blending.   
  9. Blend in a mixer till really smooth. No grain of rice or urad dal should remain behind. 
  10. Transfer this blended mixture of Vegetable Idlis for Babies and Toddlers into a deep bowl. 
  11. Add grated carrots to it. These add a dose of vitamin A which have a helping hand in vision. 
  12. Add grated cabbage. This is a good source of fiber. 
  13. Add cumin seeds for added flavour. Some babies done like the mouthfeel of spices like cumin and mustard. In that situation, you can coarsely powder and add it to the batter. 
  14. Add freshly grated coconut to it also.

  16. Mix well using a ladle.

  1. To make Vegetable Idli for Babies, heat enough water in a clean steamer or pressure cooker.
  2. Meanwhile, grease the idli moulds with oil so, that the idlis do no stick to the bottom.
  3. Pour a little batter into each greased idli mould.
  4. Steam in a steamer for 10 to 12 minutes or till the idlis are cooked. Make sure you steam the idlis on medium flame or else they will turn hard.
  5. To check whether they have cooked properly or no, insert a toothpick, knife or fork in the centre of the idli, if it comes out clean, your instant rava idlis are cooked.

    2. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida, turmeric powder, broken wheat, rice and all the vegetables and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
    3. Add approx. ¾ cup of water, salt and pepper, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
    4. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
    5. Serve the vegetable dalia khichdi for babies and toddlers lukewarm with fresh curds.
