To make chana, tuvar and green moong dal, clean, wash and soak the dals in water about 30 minutes. Drain. Combine the soaked dals, salt and 3½ cups of water in a pressure cooker and pressure cook for 2 whistles. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid. Keep aside. Heat the oil in a pan, add the cumin seeds, cloves, bayleaves, red chillies and asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds. Add the onions, green chillies, garlic and ginger and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes, chilli powder and turmeric powder, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes or till the oil separates from the masala. Add the dals and 2 cups of water, lemon juice and salt and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve hot garnished with the chopped coriander.

1/2 cup chana dal (split bengal gram)
1/2 cup toovar (arhar) dal
1/2 cup green moong dal (split green gram)
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
2 cloves (laung / lavang)
2 bay leaves (tejpatta)
2 whole dry kashmiri red chillies
1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
2 tsp finely chopped green chillies
2 tbsp finely chopped garlic (lehsun)
1 tsp chopped ginger (adrak)
1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
1 tsp chilli powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp oil
salt to taste

2 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania)

Healthy dal, tastes good.
This is a fantastic recipe and easy to make. It brings back lots of great memories from trips to Nepal, Pakistan and India. The whole family enjoy it, a good squeeze of lemon juice with coriander to serve and goes down well with a naan or rice. It freezes well too, I always make a massive pot full and manage to store between 6-8 freezer bags full in the freezer. 10/10! :)
