Ingredients


For Corn Sambar For Kids
1/4 cup grated sweet corn cob
1/2 tsp ghee
1/4 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
1 tbsp finely chopped onions
1/4 cup finely chopped tomatoes
a pinch of sambar powder
restricted quantity of salt

  1. To make {span class="bold1"}corn sambar for kids{/span}, heat the ghee in a deep non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds.
  2. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida and onions and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds.
  3. Add the tomatoes, sweet corn, sambar powder and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for another 2 to 3 minutes, while stirring occasionally in between.
  4. Add 1 cup of water, mix well and again cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally in between.
  5. Serve the {span class="bold1"}corn sambar for kids{/span} lukewarm with vegetable idlis.

Look for corn whose husks are fresh and green and not dried out. The kernels should be plump and tightly arranged in rows.   2. Grate the sweet corn using a grater. Grated sweet corn will be nice and juicy. Keep aside.

  4. Add cumin seeds to the hot oil. Cumin seeds aid in digestion. Allow the cumin seeds to crackle.

  6. Add finely chopped onions with it. Some babies don’t like the texture and flavor of chopped onions. In that case you can avoid it. 
  7. Sauté the onions on a medium flame for 30 seconds. 
  8. Then add finely chopped tomatoes. They give slight tang to the Sweet Corn Sambar for Kids. This gets balanced with the sweetness of corn. 
  9. Add sweet corn to it. 
  10. Also add a pinch of sambar powder to it. You can also add sambar powder if you wish to. Ensure to add only a pinch as excess would make it unpalatable for tiny tots. 
  11. Add salt to taste if advised by your pediatrician. This is optional. For babies below 1 year salt can be avoided and for kids above 1 year, minimum quantity of salt can be added. 
  12. Mix all the ingredients very well using a flat ladle. Cook on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes. Keep stirring it occasionally.
  13. Add 1 cup of water to adjust the consistency of Corn Sambar.
  14. Mix well with a ladle and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes. Remember to stir it in between so that the sambar doesn’t stick to the pan.

    Ingrdients for Ragi Uttapa For Babies and Toddlers

    1/2 cup ragi (nachni / red millet) flour
    2 tbsp curd (dahi) , preferably made from cow’s milk
    2 tbsp grated carrot
    2 tbsp grated cabbage
    a pinch of chilli powder
    restricted quantity of salt

    1. To make ragi uttapa for babies and toddlers , combine the curds and 4 tbsp of water in a bowl, mix well and keep aside.
    2. Combine the ragi flour, carrot, cabbage, chilli powder, curd-water mixture and salt and mix well.
    3. Heat a non-stick mini uttapa pan and grease it lightly using ¼ tsp of oil.
    4. Pour a spoonful of the batter into each of the 7 moulds and cook all the uttapas using 1 tsp of oil, till they turn golden brown in colour from both the sides.
    5. Repeat step 3 and 4 to make 4 more mini uttapas in 1 more batch.
    6. Serve the ragi uttapa for babies and toddlers immediately.
