Our dahi idli recipe is made from leftover idlis and is also called thayir idli. Dahi Idli is a perfect evening snack when you have some leftover idli from breakfast.
You could dunk cubes of idli in sambhar or curd, with appropriate tempering and garnishes. We have a recipe of dahi idli which is nothing but left over idlis with curds which have a delightful tempering to it. This lip-smacking dahi idli recipe is easy to prepare and loved by kids.
If you have a mini idli plate, you can prepare this dahi idli with mini idlis instead of idli strips. It will look even more awesome!

Makes 2 servings
For Dahi Idli
1 cup whisked curds (dahi)
2 1/2 cups leftover idli cubes
1/2 tsp powdered sugar
salt to taste
2 tsp ghee
1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
3 round red chillies (boriya mirch)
4 to 6 curry leaves (kadi patta)
1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
1 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania) for the garnish
For dahi idli

- To make {span class="bold1"}dahi idli{/span}, combine the curds, powdered sugar, salt and ¼ cup of water in a deep bowl and mix well and keep aside.
- Heat the ghee in a small non-stick pan and add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
- When the seeds crackle, add the round red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.
- Pour this tempering over the curds mixture and mix well.
- Arrange the idlis on a serving plate and pour the tempered curd mixture evenly over it.
- Serve the {span class="bold1"}dahi idli{/span} immediately garnished with coriander.

For tempering the thalicha thayir idli, heat the ghee in a small non-stick pan. Ghee can be substituted with oil.

Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. You can also add chana dal and urad dal to this South-Indian tempering.

When the seeds crackle, add the round red chillies.

Add curry leaves and asafoetida.

Sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds and mix well.

A very easy and quick recipe which makes good use of left over idlis.
