Some important points i would like to share with you on moong dal khichdi recipe.1. Take a pressure cooker and add the dal to it. We have used moong dal, but many people use a combination of toor dal, green moong dal or masoor dal. 2.To increase the nutritive value, you can add a myriad of vegetables like peas, carrots, beans, onions to the khichdi. 3. It’s best to make the khichdi slightly mushy by adding little extra water while pressure cooking. 4. When pressure cooking the yellow moong dal khichdi don’t cook on high flame as the khichdi will get stuck at the bottom of the pressure cooker and give a burnt taste. So cook on a medium flame. 5. You can replace rice with broken wheat (lapsi or dalia) in this recipe to make it healthier.

Makes 4 servings
For Moong Dal Khichdi
1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram)
1 cup rice (chawal)
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
10 black peppercorns (kalimirch)
salt to taste
2 1/2 tbsp ghee
For Serving With Moong Dal Khichdi

For moong dal khichdi
- For moong dal khichdi
- Wash and soak the dal and rice together in enough water for at least 30 minutes. Drain and keep aside.
- Combine the dal and rice with the turmeric powder, peppercorns, salt and 4½ cups of water in a pressure cooker and pressure cook for 4 whistles.
- Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
- Just before serving, add the ghee to the {span class="bold1"}moong dal khichdi{/span} and mix well.
- Serve the {span class="bold1"}moong dal khichdi{/span} hot with kadhi and papad.

- Variation: green moong dal khichdi
- Use green moong dal (split green gram) instead of the yellow moong dal, and use 2 cloves (laung / lavang) and a small piece of cinnamon (dalchini) instead of the peppercorns.

To make yellow moong dal khichdi

In a bowl put 1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram). For making the yellow moong dal khichdi, we have used yellow moong dal & white rice in this recipe, but you can use green moong dal (split green gram) or brown rice instead.

Add 1 cup rice (chawal).

Wash the rice and dal together.

Cover and soak the dal and rice together in enough water for at least 30 minutes.

Strain the soaked rice and dal.

In a pressure cooker, transfer the dal and rice. Alternatively, you can also make khichdi in a pot.

Add the turmeric powder. Turmeric has numerous health benefits. Even the minutest addition helps stimulate the flow of bile, which helps digest food thus helping to overcome indigestion.

Add the peppercorns. You can even substitute them with 2 cloves (laung / lavang) and a small piece of cinnamon (dalchini) to make the yellow moong dal khichdi more flavorfula dn aromatic.

Finally, add salt to taste. We added 1 tsp salt.

Add 4 1/2 cups of water. The consistency of the khichdi can be adjust. You can increase the quantity of water to get a more liquidy/soupy consistency or you can use only 2-2 ½ cups of water if you want a more pulao like consistency for your moong dal khichdi.

Mix well.

Pressure cook for 4 whistles.

Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.

Serve the Moong dal khichdi hot with kadhi and fried khichiya papad. I love eating my hot bowl of moong dal khichdi with raw white onions, fresh mango pickle and curd. Also, Gujaratis enjoy their khichdi along with a tall glass of chaas or masala chaas. The khichdi tastes best when it's warm. It will become thick and lumpy once it’s cold.

khichdi turned Awesome but i added asafoetida along with peppercorns which is not mentioned in recepie any reason not adding hing?
Jab mein bimaar tha, mummy ko yeh kichdi banane ko kaha. Khane si maan haat gaya tho. Lekin yeh kichdi khakaar fresh ho gaya.
