Jaundice is the build up of bilirubin in the blood because of some damage to the liver. This organ has one the most important function in the body – to metabolize all the digested nutrients and toxins in the body.

With the presence of jaundice, our aim has to eat healthy food and put less strain on the liver for metabolism.

The most important thing in jaundice is to nourish yourself very well with at least 10 glasses of water a day. It will help you to stay hydrated and also help flush out toxins from the body. It also helps to maintain electrolyte balance in the body. Have plain coconut water, preferably without coconut meat, as the coconut meat is difficult to digest.

After following this for 3 to 5 days, depending on the severity of the condition, vegetable and fruit juice combos can be introduced like Muskmelon and Pineapple Juice. Gradually you can also stop straining the juices.

Indian Soup Recipes for Jaundice

Thin vegetable soups and thin dal water without any spice and fat can be introduced a few days later. Remember you need to give your body enough protein, vitamins and minerals for recovery. You are what you eat.

Experiment with a single vegetable to make a simple soup like Carrot Soup for babies without any spice and fat. Feel free to add a pinch of salt though.

Salads, soft chapatis and soft-cooked subzis and non-spicy khichdis can be also be added slowly after 7 to 10 days. Avoid all the fried chips and samosa to mithais. No spice yet and fat in minimum quantity to put less strain on the liver.

Introduction of Dairy Products in Jaundice

In the first week of the disease, it is good to avoid milk since it is difficult to digest than strained juices and thin soups.

Passed a week after diagnosis, depending on the severity of the condition, porridge using skim milk or low fat milk can be introduced once a day. Check by having a small quantity. If you have digestion problems, then discontinue it. If you can digest, continue it for a few days and gradually introduce full fat milk.

Try and bowl curd. It is mose easy to digest. It is probiotic and well-tolerated than milk.

Tips for Jaundice Recovery Diet

  • 10 glasses of water for sure.
  • Remember to have small and frequent meals in a day rather than 2 to 3 big meals.
  • Berries are rich in antioxidants. Include them.
  • Follow Liquid diet which progresses to Soft Diet.
  • After a week add whole grains and pulses. Cook them well.
  • Herbal Tea is allowed.

  • No tea and coffee please.
  • Alcochol and carbonated beverages are your enemy. Stay away from them.
  • Kick off refined carbs like maida, bread and pasta.
  • Manage without packaged and canned foods.
  • No foods with preservatives also.
  • Fried foods for sure a big NO.
