Which Indian Breads are Gluten Free?

Gluten free diet has so far been considered a 'western' diet not prevalent in India. But with the incidence of gluten related disorders rising in India, the need for gluten free food is becoming critical in India as well.

The Indian breads, Rotis and Parathas, which are out staple food, are generally perceived to be the most difficult to prepare without wheat. The most common cereals to be avoided for those sensitive to gluten are wheat, refined flour (maida), bulgur wheat, semolina, barley and rye. Flours from various gluten free grains available in India like jowar, bajra, rice, buckwheat, nachni, rajgira, soya etc. can be used instead. So here’s how you can tempt yourself with a differently coloured and flavoured roti every day while on a gluten free diet.

We have given you an idea below of how to combine different Gluten free flours to give healthy Gluten Free Breads. At a basic level we have Garlic Roti which is made of Jowar and Bajra. Then we have just a Jowar Roti stuffed with Cabbage. You can find a large collection of Gluten Free Rotis  and Parathas and a detailed list of Gluten Free Flours in India.
