A novel soup recipe, Indian split pea soup is a vegetable and lentil soup with a difference. The split pea is boiled along with spices and tomatoes to create a perfect healthy winter soup recipe.

1 1/3 cups toovar (arhar) dal
5 1/2 cups water
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 fresh green chilli, chopped
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera) powder
1 tsp ground coriander (dhania) seeds
1/2 small cucumber
3 spring onions
6 tbsp plain curds (dahi)
salt and black pepper (kalimirch) powder to taste
Method
- Wash and drain dal.
- Place in saucepan with water and turmeric and bring to a boil. reduce heat and cover. simmer in low heat for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours. remove from heat.
- Place peas and liquid into blender. add lemon juice and rest of the ingredients except the yogurt,cucumber and the scallions.
- Dice the cucumber and the scallions just before serving.
- Garnish with it and a swirl of yogurt.
