Sambhar sadam is a traditional way of preparing the South Indian lentil recipe, sambhar. The sambhar powder, red chilli powder is added to the boiled tur dal and then cooked with tamarind pulp and a tempering of curry leaves, mustard seeds and chillies.
Sambhar Sadam recipe - How to make Sambhar Sadam

2 cups rice (chawal)
3 tbsp oil
4 medium sized onions
4 large sized tomatoes
1 tbsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
4 red chillies, chopped into 3 pieces
3/4 tbsp asafoetida (hing)
1/2 tbsp urad dal (split black lentil) flour
1/2 tsp fenugreek (methi) seeds
1/4 tbsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1/2 tsp chilli powder
3 tbsp sambaar powder
few curry leaves (kadi patta)
few coriander (dhania) leaves
salt to taste
Method
- Boil the rice.
- In a kadai heat the oil. add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, crushed black grams,red chillies.
- When it crackles add curry leaves and onions. fry till transparent.
- Add turmeric powder, tomatoes and fry again for 4 minutes
- Now add red chillipowder, sambhar powder, hing and salt .sauté for a while
- Add boiled rice.and mix well after reducing the flame.
- Remove from heat and garnish with coriander leaves
- Serve with pickle and pappad.
