Makes 4 servings
4 tsp toovar (arhar) dal
2 to 3 tsp tamarind (imli) pulp
5 to 6 curry leaves (kadi patta)
1 tsp black peppercorns (kalimirch) , coarsely ground
1 1/2 tsp coarsely ground cumin seeds (jeera)
2 to 3 red chillies
1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
2 to 3 tsp ghee
4 tsp grated jaggery (gur)
1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)

- Method
- Heat ghee in a vessel and add mustard seeds. When the mustards seeds have spluttered add haldi, hing, jeera, pepper , red chilli and curry leaves.
- Leave it for 20 to 30 secs and add toor dal. Leave that for 20 to 30 secs until the raw smell is gone and add 6 tumblers of water.
