Devour the spicy lentil recipe, mast channa prepared from channa dal with steamed rice or roti. The boiled chana dal is cooked with ground spices and served tempered with mustard seeds, curry leaves and slit chillies. Add fresh coconut scrapings as garnish.

Makes 4 servings
1 cup chana dal (split bengal gram) , cooked
2 whole dry kashmiri red chillies
1/4 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
1 tsp urad dal (split black lentils)
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
1 tbsp coconut oil
salt to taste
2 springs of curry leaves (kadi patta)
3 green chillies
1 tbsp grated coconut
1 tsp grated ginger (adrak)
2 tsp finely chopped coriander (dhania) for garnishing

- Method
- Combine the green chillies, coconut and ginger and blend in a mixer to a smooth paste.
- Heat the coconut oil in a pan and add the asafoetida, mustard seeds, urad dhal, red chillies and curry leaves.
- When the seeds crackle, add the grounded paste, boiled channa dhal and salt, mix well and saute for 10 minutes.
- Garnish it with coriander leaves and serve hot.
