Special Dal Makhani recipe - How to make Special Dal Makhani

Makes 6 servings
1 1/2 cups toovar (arhar) dal
3/4 cup chopped tomatoes
a pinch of turmeric powder (haldi)
2 tsp chopped coriander (dhania)
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
a pinch asafoetida (hing)
3 tsp chopped green chillies
4 to 5 curry leaves (kadi patta)
1/4 cup chopped onions
1 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tsp coriander (dhania) powder
salt to taste

- Method
- Combine the dal and tomatoes in a deep pan with a pinch of turmeric powder, add enough water and cook till the dal is soft.
- Keep aside.
- Heat the butter in a pan, add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds.
- When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida, curry leaves and green chillies and saute for few seconds.
- Add the onions and saute till they turn golden brown in colour.
- Add the coriander seeds powder, turmeric and chilli powder, mix well and saute for few more seconds.
- Remove from the flame, add the dal and tomatoes and whisk well.
- Add 1 cup of water and bring it to a boil.
- Serve hot garnished with coriander and with rotis or plain rice.
