Every time we are at a restaurant we are tempted to order tandoori Rotis, because we think we cannot make it at home. Here is the instant and homemade version of butter tandoori roti at home.
While it is awesome to bite into authentic tandoori rotis cooked in a tandoor, you will be excited to know that the same wonderful taste and texture can be replicated at home using the humble tava!
In instant tandoori roti we have used curd instead of yeast as it helps in fermentation of the dough. Sugar is add which helps in fermentation and also to balance out the flavour, gives beautiful colour to the rotis. Though the dough of this tandoori roti doesn't rise much, but the final texture and aroma is just irresistible and fabulous, which can be cut into wedges and served with a platter of sabzis, kebabs , tikkis and chutneys .

Makes 6 rotis
For Tandoori Roti
2 cups whole wheat flour (gehun ka atta)
1/2 cup fresh curd (dahi)
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
2 tsp oil
salt to taste
1/2 tsp oil for greasing

6 tsp butter for topping
For tandoori roti
- For tandoori roti
- To make {span class="bold1"}tandoori roti{/span}, combine 2 pinches of salt and enough water. Mix well and keep aside.
- Combine all the ingredients into a deep bowl and knead into a soft dough using approx. . ½ cup warm water.
- Grease the top of the dough using ½ tsp oil and cover with a damp muslin cloth and keep aside in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Divide the dough into 6 equal portions.
- Roll a portion of the dough into a 175 mm. (7”) diameter circle using a little whole wheat flour for rolling.
- Heat a non-stick tava (griddle) on a high flame and when hot, sprinkle the salt-water and do not wipe it.
- Apply water on one side of the rolled roti and place the wet side facing downwards gently on a hot tava.
- Cook it till small blisters appear on the surface. Flip the tava on an open flame and cook again while rotating the tava till brown spots appear.
- Remove from the flame and apply 1 tsp of butter.
- Repeat steps 5 to 9 to make remaining 5 rotis.
- Serve the {span class="bold1"}tandoori roti{/span} immediately with subzi of your choice.
