Samo khichdi, a faraali recipe that can be had during fasting days as well, is made by quickly sautéing all the ingredients together and cooking them for less than 10 minutes! Made from sama (sanwa millets), peanuts, green chillies, ginger and ghee, this samo khichdi is as simple to make.

Samo has too many names and people known it different. Bengali –Shamula, Gujarati – Sama, Hindi – Shama, Marathi – Shamul, Tamil – Kudirai Valu, Telugu – Bonta Chamalu and other names – Barnyard Millet / Samvat ke Chawal.

Ginger and green chillies give this moraiya khichdi an element of spice, while peanuts contribute crunch, flavour and aroma to this delightful dish. Serve the sanwa khichdi immediately, as millet-based dishes sometimes get lumpy on cooling.

Maharashtrians tradionally have their samo khichdi (called bhagar khichdi ) along the farali peanut chutney, but you can also have it along rajgira kadhi and curd.

This is personally my favourite farali khichdi, you don’t have to wait for a fasting day to relish it, you can also have it as your breakfast or snack.

Ingredients


For Samo Khichdi
1 cup sanwa millet (sama)
1 tbsp ghee
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1/4 cup roasted and coarsely crushed peanuts
1 tsp finely chopped ginger (adrak)
1 1/2 tsp finely chopped green chillies
rock salt (sendha namak) to taste

  1. To make {span class="bold1"}samo khichdi{/span}, heat the ghee in a deep non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds.
  2. When the seeds crackle, add the samo, peanuts, ginger and green chillies and sauté on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Add 3 cups water and rock salt, mix well cover with a lid and cook on a medium flame for 6 to 7 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  4. Serve the {span class="bold1"}samo khichdi{/span} immediately with rajgira kadhi or curds.

How to make Samo Khichdi

  1. To make  samo khichdi recipe | moraiya khichdi | bhagar khichdi | farali khichdi | sanwa khichdi | in a deep non-stick pan heat ghee.
  2. Once the ghee is hot, add cumin seeds.
  3. When the seeds crackle, add samo.
  4. Add crushed and roasted peanuts. Peanuts perk up the taste of samo khichdi by adding in a nice nutty flavour.
  5. Add ginger.
  6. Add green chillies.
  7. Sauté on a medium flame for 3-4 minutes or until the samo changes colour.
  8. Add 3 cups of water and rock salt. We have used rock salt as it is a faral recipe.
  9. Mix  samo khichdi | moraiya khichdi | bhagar khichdi | farali khichdi | sanwa khichdi | well, cover with a lid and cook on medium flame for 6-7 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  10. Serve  samo khichdi | moraiya khichdi | bhagar khichdi | farali khichdi | sanwa khichdi | immediately with rajgira kadhi or curds. If planning to eat at later stage, add little water, reheat and relish it.

Very nice faraal recipe. I use to make this recipe in the pressure cooker, but i tried it in a different way this time. Each grain of samo is seperate in this recipe and it tastes very delicious with rajgira kadhi. I have never had such a satiating meal on my fasting days. Thanks..
