A delicious Gujju dal recipe which enjoys a regular feature in most Gujarati households. The simple gujju dal is a tuar dal recipe cooked in a sweet and sour way. The tuar dal is tempered with mustard and cumin seeds and flavored with tomatoes, chillies ,dried kokum ,jeera powder and sweetened with a dash of jaggery. Simply delicious!

1 cup toovar (arhar) dal
1 tomato, finely chopped
4 green chillies, slit
4 pcs kokum
2 tsp chilli powder
2 tsp garam masala
1 tsp coriander-cumin seeds (dhania-jeera) powder
turmeric powder (haldi)
salt to taste
a pinch asafoetida (hing)
jaggery (gur) - size of a small lemon
For Tadka
oil
curry leaves (kadi patta)
mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
cumin seeds (jeera)
Method
- Pressure cook the tur dal for 3 whistles with 2 cups of water.
- Heat oil or ghee in a kadai. add rai and jeera . let it splutter. add the curry leaves, green chillies and fry for a minute. add the finely chopped tomatoes and saute for 3 min. add turmeric, red chilli powder, garam masala, dhania -jeera powder and hing and fry.
- Add this tadka to the dal and mix well. add water to maintain a nice consistency (not too thick nor too thin). add the dried kokum (if not available you can add some amchur powder) and jaggery and bring to a boil. garnish with chopped corriander leaves and serve hot with chappatis or rice and acchar!!
