Sunday or a long tiring day? We have a perfect, quick and scrumptious recipe for such day which is famously known as “Tawa rice”. Tawa rice is a quick treat off the pav bhaji cart and also a popular Mumbai Street Foods and is also found on the menu of mostly all the restaurants.
Every household has their own way and style of making tava rice, it’s the same about all the Indian dishes. Similarly, veg tawa rice also has a lot many variations and this recipe is our variation to it.
Preparation and cooking of tawa rice is quite simple and quick. Here, we have not even used much masala’s and ingredients. We have used basic ingredients that I can bet on would be available in every Indian household.
To make tawa rice firstly prepare chilli garlic paste by pounded Kashmiri red mirchi and garlic with little water in a mortar and pestle and keep aside. Further, take a tawa add oil in the tava. You can also use butter if you wish to, butter will enhance the taste even better. Next, add veggies onions. Capsicum and tomatoes cook them. Once veggies are cooked, add turmeric which would give our tava rice a vibrant yellow color and also, add curd.
Curd would impart creaminess and tanginess to our tawa rice and make it taste even better. Further, add the cooked rice and 1 ½ tsp of pav bhaji masala which would get the taste of tava rice to heaven and make it taste just WOW!! Mix cheese veg tava rice well and serve with grated cheese on top and a lemon wedge on side.
This veg tawa rice is my go to when I have leftover rice and hunger strikes in, as this recipe is ready in a jiffy and is loved by everyone. I usually make veg tawa rice as a one-pot meal dish at home along with a bowl of curd or boondi raita. You can relish this delicious tawa rice along with any raita that you wish to. Also, I take this rice to work and pack it for my kiddo’s tiffin box.
At home, you can use a broad pan to make this Tawa rice dish if you don’t have a huge tawa. Serve the tawa rice with accompaniments like Raitas / Kachumber and roasted papad.

Makes 4 servings
For Tava Rice
2 cups cooked rice (chawal)
3 whole dry kashmiri red chillies , broken into pieces
3 garlic (lehsun) cloves
3 tbsp oil
1/2 cup thinly sliced onions
1/2 cup thinly sliced capsicum
1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
2 tbsp fresh curd (dahi)
2 tsp pav bhaji masala
salt to taste
For The Garnish
2 tbsp grated processed cheese
For tava rice
- For tava rice
- To make {span class="bold1"}tawa rice{/span}, combine the red chillies and garlic along with little water and grind in a mortar-pestle (khalbhatta) to a smooth paste. Keep aside.
- Heat the oil on a non-stick tava (griddle), add the onions and sauté on a medium flame for 1 minute.
- Add the chilli-garlic paste and sauté on a medium flame for another 30 seconds.
- Add the capsicum, tomatoes, turmeric powder and curds and sauté on a medium flame for 1 more minute.
- Add the cooked rice, pav bhaji masala and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
- Serve {span class="bold1"}tawa rice{/span} immediately garnished with cheese.

How to make Tawa Rice

Add capsicum, it will provide crunch to our tava rice

Add tomatoes which will provide tang.

Add turmeric powder. It will provide beautiful yellow color to our tava rice.

Add curd.

Saute for few seconds. Make sure your curd doesnt curdle.

Add cooked rice and salt.

Add pav bhaji masala, to enhance the taste of tava rice.

Mix well and saute the tawa rice | tawa pulao | veg tawa rice | Indian cheese veg tava rice | for 2 minutes on medium flame. When mixing the rice use round spoon, flat spoon tends to break the rice.

Serve the tawa rice | tawa pulao | veg tawa rice | Indian cheese veg tava rice | hot, garnished with grated cheese on top.
