Description

Banana chips are made from unripe bananas. Chips are crispy, salty and spicy and consumers prefer freshly made banana chips. One can purchase banana chips from outside or make them at home. In the state of Kerala, a variety of banana called "Nendran" is used to make banana chips. These are famous locally and are exported worldwide.

To make banana chips at home, follow this easy recipe:

Use good quality unripe bananas for making these chips. Wash, peel and the cut into thin slices or as required. Wash the slices in boiled water and then drain the water. Dry them completely and then deep fry in hot oil. Note that coconut oil is usually preferred for deep frying of these chips. Alternatively, one can use sunflower oil. Add salt and spices according to your choice. Another variation is to cover with sugar or honey which gives the chips a sweet taste.

How to select

If making banana chips at home, ensure that you use good quality unripe bananas. If purchasing banana chips from outside, ensure that the chips are fresh and packed in sealed plastic bags.

· It needs no accompaniment. Banana Chips can be had as a snack at any time of the day and is liked by all ages.
· It is served in traditional south indian meals on banana leaves, In kerala, banana chips have to be served during weddings,Onam etc.

How to store

Always store chips in air tight containers and ensure that no moisture reacts with these chips. If not stored properly, chips become moist and are not crisp any more.
