A classic recipe that has stood the test of time... we present to you the ever-popular Vegetable Pizza. While this is a basic pizza that is easy and quick to prepare, it has a universal appeal and is the safest bet to place on a party menu.

We have used homemade pizza base, so you can prepare the vegetable pizza in a jiffy. A colorful assortment of veggies gives this pizza an interesting crunch, while pizza sauce and a dash of spices and herbs give it an awesome flavor. Although pizza base is readily available in stores, the fresh taste and texture of a homemade one are unbeatable. And, well, it is not such an adventurous activity either. It is quite easy to make at home, as this Basic Pizza Base recipe will show you.

For, tava pizza we have made the pizza base by activating the yeast first, take yeast in a small bowl, add sugar and add water, make sure the water is lukewarm and not hot as it may kill the yeast. The rising time will vary on the climatic condition and quality of the yeast. Once the yeast is activated, you will see a frothy layer formed on the top. Further, take plain flour in a bowl, add yeast water mixture, add olive oil and some salt to it. Combine all the ingredients and knead into a dough soft and smooth dough. Cover the dough with a wet muslin cloth and keep aside for 1 hour in a warm place or till the dough is double in size. If you don’t plan to use the dough for a day, place it in the fridge straight away; take it out 3-4 hrs before using and then continue the rest of the procedure. Once the dough has risen, remove excessive air and grease the dough and divide it. Thereafter, roll it into desired size and prick it using a fork so that the base does not puff up. Bake in a preheated oven for 5 minutes and your pizza base is ready to use.

Pizza Sauce is at the heart of a pizza’s success! Tangy and flavourful, it is responsible for giving out that appetizing aroma when the pizza gets baked. Some like their pizza sauce with fresh tomatoes more herby, while others like it more spicy, and yet others prefer a tangy overtone. This quick pizza sauce recipe is a balanced one, which has the right amount of everything. Just make sure you choose ripe tomatoes to make this delectable pizza sauce.

How to make pizza sauce

  1. For the Pizza Sauce, clean, wash and remove the eyes of the tomatoes. You do not want them in your pizza sauce

  7. Cut them into 2 and deseed them using a sharp knife. Removing the seeds not only ensures a smooth puree, but also ensures that the sourness of the tomatoes reduces.
  8. Roughly chop them.
  9. Transfer to a blender.
  10. Blend in a mixer till smooth. Use a big mixer jar and not the small one as when you will blend it will overflow. Keep aside.
  11. In a broad non-stick pan, heat the olive oil. Olive oil is used in all Italian recipes as it taste really great. Add the garlic. You can also use the paste if you have it ready but finely chopped always gives a better taste and good mouthfeel. If you are jain, you can learn how to make Jain Pizza Sauce.

  21. Add the sugar to the pizza sauce and mix well.
  22. Cook the pizza sauce on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  23. Store the Pizza Sauce (Quick Pizza Sauce) in an air- tight container and use as required. Stays fresh in the fridge for 4 days and freezer for atleast 3 months

How to make the pizza base

  1. For the homemade pizza dough recipe, in a small bowl take dry yeast.
  2. Add sugar.
  3. Add 2 tbsp of lukewarm water. Dip your finger in water to check if it’s lukewarm or no before adding. Water that's too hot can damage or kill the yeast.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Cover with a lid and keep aside for 5 minutes. The rising time will vary as per the climatic conditions and the quality of yeast
  6. After 5 minutes, the yeast mixture will look like this. You can see a frothy layer on top which indicates our yeast has been activated and is ready to use. If you don’t see a creamy frothy layer then discard the yeast and start over again
  7. In a deep bowl, take plain flour.
  8. Add yeast-water mixture.
  9. Pour a little olive oil.
  10. Add some sugar. Furthermore, add salt..
  11. Using enough water combine all the ingredients.
  12. Knead into a soft, smooth dough. Shape the dough into a proper round using both your hands while tucking the edges at the bottom. If you have a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment, then make use of it to prepare the pizza dough.
  13. Cover the dough with a wet muslin cloth and keep aside for 1 hour in a warm place or till the dough is double in size. If you don’t plan to use the dough for a day, place it in the fridge straight away; take it out 3-4 hrs before using and then continue the rest of the procedure.
  14. After an hour, the dough will rise and resemble this.
  15. Press the dough lightly to remove the air.
  16. Pour a little olive oil on the dough and also, grease your palms with it.
  17. Knead the dough again to form a smooth pizza dough.
  18. Divide the dough into 3 equal portions.
  19. To make pizza base at home, roll a portion into a 175 mm. (7”) diameter circle with the help of plain flour. While rolling the portion of the dough, keep the other 2 portions covered with the wet muslin cloth so that they do not dry up. If you want to get air pockets and a crisp dough, then don’t use a rolling pin and stretch the dough using your hands. This will prevent the popping of air bubbles.
  20. Prick the circle evenly using a fork so that it doesn’t puff up.
  21. Similarly, roll and prick out the remaining 2 circles and place all the 3 pizza base on a baking tray.
  22. Bake them in a preheated oven at 180°c (360°f) for 5 minutes. The time required will vary from oven to oven so, do keep an eye to prevent the pizza base from burning.
  23. Remove them and use as required.
