Ingredients


For The Chillas
1 1/2 cups green moong dal (split green gram) with skin , soaked for 2 hours and drained
1 1/2 tbsp roughly chopped green chillies
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
salt to taste
12 tsp peanut oil for cooking

For The Stuffing
2 cups boiled potato cubes
3/4 cup boiled green peas
1 tbsp oil
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
2 tsp finely chopped green chillies
1/2 tbsp dried mango powder (amchur)
salt to taste

  1. Combine the moong dal, green chillies and approx. 1 cup of water in a mixer and blend till smooth.
  2. Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl, add the asafoetida and salt and mix well. Keep aside.

For the stuffing

  1. Heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan, add the cumin seeds and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds.
  2. Add all the remaining ingredients, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while mashing it slightly using a potato masher.
  3. Divide the stuffing into 12 equal portions. Keep aside.

  1. Heat a non-stick tava (griddle) and lightly grease it with oil. Pour a ladleful of the batter on the tava (griddle) and spread it evenly to make a thin circle of 175 mm. (7") diameter.
  2. Cook, using 1 tsp oil, till it turns golden brown in colour form both the sides.
  3. Place one portion of the stuffing on one half of the chilla and fold it to make a semi-circle.
  4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 to make 11 more stuffed moong dal chillas.
  5. Serve the stuffed moong dal chilla immediately with green chutney.

They make up for a quick and easy breakfast & evening snack.   1. For preparing the moong dal chila, pick and clean the green moong dal. You can also use yellow moong dal or a combination of both. Also, you can add some urad dal to increase the nutrient content of the cheela. Wash and transfer the moong dal to a deep bowl.
  2. Pour enough water to submerge the dal.
  3. keep it aside to soak for 2 hours.
  4. After 2 hours, drain the dal.
  5. Transfer to a mixer jar.
  6. Add green chillies. To make moong dal cheela more flavorful, add in some ginger, garlic, curry leaves, coriander to the batter if you like.
  7. Add approx. ¾ cup of water.
  8. Blend in a mixer till smooth.
  9. Transfer it to a bowl.
  10. Add the asafoetida. This aids in digestion.
  11. Add the salt. Mix well and our moong dal chilla batter is ready!

  7. Add salt to taste.
  8. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
  9. Mash it slightly using a potato masher and our potato-green pea stuffing for moong dal chilla is ready. Divide the stuffing into 12 equal portions. Keep aside.

  1. To prepare stuffed moong dal cheelas, heat a non-stick tava (griddle) and lightly grease it with oil.
  2. Pour a ladleful of the batter on the tava .

  4. Drizzle a little oil all over and along the edges to cook the moong dal chilla.  Ghee/Butter can be used instead of oil.

  7. Fold it to make a semi-circle.
  8. Remove our aloo-matar moong dal cheela in a plate.
  9. Repeat steps 1 to 3 to make 11 more stuffed mung dal chillas.
  10. Serve mung dal cheelas immediately with green chutney.

   Hi, Yes you can make with yellow, add about 1/4 cup of white urad dal while soaking, so you will get nice base while you make the chila.

I have tried and loved the recipe. I saw this recipe while searching for gluten free breakfast options. Please be informed that Asafoetida or Heeng contains gluten. I request Tarla Ma''am to to kindly mention the same in the recipes.

   Hi Molly, thank you for your feedback. Yes Asafoetida (some brands) do have gluten as they contain either wheat flour or maida in some quantity. You can try and use pure Asafoetida (rock form) and use it in the recipe.

Instead of Moong Daal with skin, it is preferable to use whole Moong grain. In that case, you need to soak it for about 8-10 hours. It gives a fluffy appearance and good taste. Even stuffing is not required, just some chatni will help.

Simple taste, super easy to make, very healthy. I made on non-stick with zero oil and they tasted yum. Best served hot.
