Flour Tortillas

Tortillas are at the heart of Mexican cuisine. With many an interesting filling, you can turn these Flour Tortillas into satiating and lip-smacking snacks that can even replace a meal. Here, we have used a wholesome combination of whole wheat flour and plain flour to make these Flour Tortillas. You can even make a large batch of these when you find time and store them in the freezer for quick use on a hurried day.

  1. Combine the flours, oil and salt in a deep bowl and knead into a soft dough using enough water.
  2. Cover and keep aside for 30 minutes.
  3. Divide the dough into 14 equal portions and roll each portion into a 200 mm. (8”) diameter circle using a little plain flour for rolling.
  4. Heat a non-stick tava (griddle) and cook each roti till light brown spots appear on both the sides.
  5. Use as required.

  1. What is flour tortilla made off? Indian style whole wheat flour tortilla is made from easily available ingredients from in any Indian home which is  3/4 cup whole wheat flour (gehun ka atta), 1 1/2 cups plain flour (maida), 4 tsp oil, salt to taste and plain flour (maida) for rolling.

  2. Add 1 1/2 cups plain flour (maida).
  3. Add 4 tsp oil.
  4. Add salt.
  5. Add enough water to knead into a soft dough. We first added 1/2 cup water and then another 1/4 cup water. Total water used is 3/4th cup.
  6. Knead into a soft dough.
  7. Cover and keep aside for 30 minutes.
  8. This is what the dough looks like after 30 minutes.
  9. Divide the dough into 14 equal portions.

  1. Dust a rolling board with some plain flour.
  2. Flatten the dough and put a bit of plain flour over it.
  3. Roll each portion into a 200 mm. (8”) diameter circle.
  4. Heat a non-stick tava (griddle).
  5. Cook each roti till light brown spots appear on both the sides. You will have to keep flipping the roti while cooking it.
  6. Repeat for the remaininig 13 tortillas.
  7. Serve hot.

Flour tortillas are very similar to our Indian roti. These are healthier than corn based tortillas. Stuff these Mexican tortillas with spicy salsa, stir fried veggies and relish them.
