For Chana Dal Seekh Kebab
1/2 cup chana dal (split bengal gram)
1 1/2 tbsp oil
1 1/2 cups steamed sliced raw banana
1/4 cup finely chopped cabbage
1 tbsp finely chopped green chillies
1/4 cup finely chopped mint leaves (phudina)
salt to taste
1/2 tsp dried ginger powder (sonth)
1 1/2 tsp chaat masala
1/2 tsp garam masala
2 tsp oil for cooking

For chana dal seekh kebab

    For chana dal seekh kebab
  1. To make chana dal seekh kebabs, heat 1 tbsp of oil in a broad non-stick pan, add the chana dal and sauté on a slow flame for 3 to 4 minutes.
  2. Cool slightly and grind the chana dal to a powder. Keep aside.
  3. Heat the remaining 2 tbsp of oil in the same pan, add the cabbage and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Add the bananas, green chillies and mint leaves, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove from the flame and blend in a mixer to a smooth paste without using any water. Keep aside.
  6. Combine the chana dal powder, raw banana paste, salt, dry ginger powder, chaat masala and garam masala and mix well.
  7. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each portion into 150 mm. (6") long kebabs using skewers.
  8. Heat a non-stick tava (griddle), grease it with 1 tsp oil and cook the kebabs on a medium flame till they turn golden brown in colour from ball the sides.

  1. Cook 4 raw banana (platains) in a pressure cooker.
  2. Add 2 cups of water or enough water to cover them.
     
  3. Pressure cooker and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
     
  4. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid. 
     
  5. Remove the bananas, keep aside and allow it to cool completely.
     
  6. Peel the bananas and cut them into slices. Keep aside.

  1. Heat 2 tsp coconut oil or oil in a broad non-stick pan. Use coconut oil instead of processed seed oils like soyabean oil, canola, sunflower oil, corn oil and other omega-6 rich oils should be used in very low amounts.  Coconut oil is a medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s).
  2. Add 1/2 cup chana dal (split bengal gram). One cup of cooked Chana Dal provides 33% of your protein for the day. Chana dal is  heart and diabetic friendly, also rich in fiber.
  3. Sauté on a slow flame for 3 to 4 minutes.
  4. Cool slightly.
  5. Put the roasted chana dal in the mixer.
  6. Grind the chana dal to a powder. 
  7. Protein rich roasted and ground chana dal.

Non jains can replace steamed raw bananas with boiled and mashed potatoes.
  5. Add 1 1/2 tsp finely chopped green chillies.
  6. Add 1/4 cup finely chopped mint leaves (phudina). Mint imparts a vibrant and fresh flavor that complements the other ingredients. The coolness of mint helps to balance the heat from the spices used in the kebabs.
  7. Mix well.
  8. Cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  9. Remove from the flame, cool and put in a mixer.
  10. Blend in a mixer to a smooth paste without using any water. 
  11. Put in a plate.
  12. Add the chana dal powder.
  13. Add salt to taste. We added 1/2 tsp salt.
  14. Add 1 1/2 tsp chaat masala
  15. Add 1/2 tsp dried ginger (soonth) powder. NOTE that Jains can skip this ingredient.
  16. Add 1/2 tsp garam masala.
  17. Mix well.
  18. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each portion into 150 mm. (6") long kebabs using skewers.
