A spectacular preparation where a simple tovar dal combined with spinach that enhances the appearance and flavour of the dish. This mildly spiced recipe is a storehouse of nutrients since the dal is rich in proteins where as the spinach is a rich source of calcium. Palak di dal should be eaten hot with roti or rice

Ingredients


For Arhar ki Dal With Spinach
1 cup toovar (arhar) dal , washed and drained
2 cups shredded spinach (palak)
1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1/2 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
5 to 6 curry leaves (kadi patta)
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
1 tbsp finely chopped garlic (lehsun)
2 tsp ginger-green chilli paste
salt to taste
1 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania)

Method

For arhar ki dal with spinach

  1. To make {span class="bold1"}arhar ki dal with spinach recipe{/span}, combine toor dal, tomato, turmeric powder and 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker.
  2. Pressure cook it on a medium flame for 3 whistles. Allow the steam to escape and then open the lid.
  3. Whisk the dal well and keep aside.
  4. Heat oil in a deep non-stick pan, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves and onions.
  5. Sauté on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes. Add garlic and ginger-green chilli paste and mix well.
  6. Add the spinach and cook on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  7. Add the cooked dal, salt to taste along with 1 cup water. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 4 to 5 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  8. Serve {span class="bold1"}arhar ki dal with spinach{/span} hot garnished with coriander.
