Ingredients


For The Dal
2 tbsp yellow moong dal (split yellow gram) , washed and drained
1/4 cup masoor dal (split red lentil) , washed and drained
1 slit green chilli
1 tsp roughly chopped ginger (adrak)
1 tsp roughly chopped garlic (lehsun)
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
salt to taste

Other Ingredients
2 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
6 curry leaves (kadi patta)
1/2 tsp fenugreek (methi) seeds
1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
1/2 cup ladies finger (bhindi) , cut into long strips
1/2 cup cluster beans (gavarfali) , cut into 25 mm. (1") pieces
1/4 cup carrot cubes
1/2 cup potato cubes
1/4 cup brinjal (baingan / eggplant) cubes
1 tsp chilli powder
salt to taste

Method

  1. Combine the yellow moong dal, masoor dal, green chilli, ginger, garlic, turmeric powder, salt and 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  2. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
  3. Discard the green chilli and whisk the dal till smooth. Keep aside.

  1. Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan, add the cumin seeds, curry leaves, fenugreek seeds and asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.
  2. Add the lady fingers, cluster beans, carrot, potatoes, brinjal, chilli powder and ½ cup of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 8 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  3. Add the cooked dal, little salt and 1 cup of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 10 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  4. Serve hot.

I not only enjoyed making the dal, but enjoyed eating it too.Savs the trouble of cooking dal & vegs separately.Goes well with rice.
