Fada ni khichdi is a wholesome one dish meal that can be served for breakfast, lunch, or any time of the day for that matter. Made with nutritious broken wheat and yellow moong dal simmered with vegetables and spices, this dish is quite wholesome and does not even require any grand accompaniments. Just serve with plain or masala curd, to make a delectable meal.

Ingredients


For Fada ni Khichdi
3/4 cup broken wheat (dalia) , washed and drained
2 tbsp yellow moong dal (split yellow gram) , washed and drained
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
salt to taste
2 tbsp oil
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
4 curry leaves (kadi patta)
1 tsp garlic (lehsun) paste
1/2 tsp ginger (adrak) paste
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
1/2 cup finely chopped tomatoes
2 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp pav bhaji masala
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania)
2 tsp lemon juice

For Serving With Fada ni Khichdi
fresh curd (dahi)

Method

For fada ni khichdi

  1. To make {span class="bold1"}fada ni khichdi{/span}, combine the fada, yellow moong dal, turmeric powder, little salt and 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  2. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
  3. Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan, add the cumin seeds and curry leaves and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds.
  4. Add the garlic paste, ginger paste and onions and sauté on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
  5. Add the tomatoes and 1 tbsp of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the chilli powder and pav bhaji masala, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  7. Add the cooked fada- moong dal mixture, 1½ cups of water and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  8. Add the coriander and lemon juice and mix well.
  9. Serve the {span class="bold1"}fada ni khichdi{/span} hot with curds.
