Chawli is often used in subzis , but rare is a snack using this nutritious bean!

Here is a traditional recipe from Andhra cuisine that uses boiled chawli to make scrumptious vadas. While the original version is deep-fried, this recipe of Alasanda Vada is happily tava-fried so you can relish it without any worries.

Also, since rice flour is unsuitable for diabetics , we have used whole wheat flour for binding instead.

With the crunch of onions and many a tasteful ingredient like coriander, ginger and garlic, this vada sure it a yummy treat for your palate – and a healthful one to boot.

1 1/2 cups soaked andboiled chawli (cow pea / lobhia)
1 1/2 tbsp whole wheat flour (gehun ka atta)
1/4 cup finely chopped onions
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania)
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1/4 tsp chilli powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1/2 tsp ginger (adrak) paste
1/2 tsp garlic (lehsun) paste
salt to taste
2 tsp oil for greasing and cooking

  1. Combine the chawli and 2 tbsp of water in a mixer and blend to a coarse paste.
  2. Transfer the paste into a deep bowl, add all the remaining ingredients and mix well.
  3. Divide the mixture into 10 equal portions.
  4. Wet your hand and take a portion of the mixture in your hand and shape into a 75 mm. (3”) diameter circle. Make a hole in the centre with your thumb.
  5. Repeat step 4 to shape 4 more vadas.
  6. Heat a non-stick tava (griddle) , grease it with ½ tsp of oil. Place 5 vadas on it and cook on a medium flame using ½ tsp of oil till they turn golden brown in colour from both the sides.
  7. Repeat steps 4 to 6 to shape and cook 5 more vadas.
  8. Serve immediately.

First time I ever tried a vada using chawli beans... they turned out to be fantastic. Even my 5 yr old enjoyed it. It''s non-fried so absolutely healthy. Will surely make it again.
