Batata Poha is a breakfast dish that's really easy to make and is commonly eaten in most houses. To make it healthier, I have substituted potatoes with green peas in this matar poha recipe making it healthier with fibre-rich green peas.

Green peas poha is really quick and easy to make. The ingredients used in making it are easily available in every well maintained Indian household pantry. All you need is poha, green peas, onions and Indian spices to make green pea poha.

To make matar poha recipe, take oil in a deep non stick pan and add mustard seeds. Tradionally mustard seeds are added in poha which give it a unique taste. Next, add asafoetida. Add onions and boiled green peas and cook it for a while. Further add turmeric which imparts a beautiful color to our poha. Also. To enhance the taste of green pea poha, add green chilli paste which can be adjusted according to your preference of spice. Also, add sugar and lemon juice. And lastly, some milk to give poha a soft texture. Mix well and our green pea poha are ready to be relished!!

Ingredients


For Green Pea Poha
2 cups thick beaten rice (jada poha)
2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
1/2 cup boiled green peas
salt to taste
3/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tsp green chilli paste
1 tsp sugar
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp milk , optional
1 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania)

Method
For green pea poha

    For green pea poha
  1. To make green pea poha, heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan and add the mustard seeds.
  2. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.
  3. Add the onions and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Add the green peas, 2 tbsp of water and turmeric powder, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  5. Meanwhile, place the beaten rice in a sieve and hold it under running water for a few seconds. Toss well to drain out all the excess water.
  6. Add the washed and drained beaten rice, green chilli paste, sugar, lemon juice, milk and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  7. Add the coriander, mix well and keep the green pea poha aside to cool slightly.

How to make Green Pea Poha|Matar Poha

  1. To make matar poha recipe | green pea poha | healthy matar poha |  wash and drain the beaten rice or Poha and drain. 
  2. Heat oil in a broad non stick pan. 
  3. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle.
  4. Add asafoetida and saute a few seconds.
  5. Add onions and saute on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes to cook the onions. The onions should be translucent and pink when cooked, do not brown them.
  6. Add the washed green pea. you can use frozen green peas as well. just thaw them before use. If using fresh green peas in the Green pea poha | Matar poha  make sure you boil them and use them.  
  7. Add 2 tsp water and tumeric. Do not add excess amount of tumeric as it will make the Green Pea Poha|Matar Poha look dull and taste earthy. The poha should look bright yellow. 
  8. Add water and cook for 1-2 minutes while stirring occasionally. 
  9. Add the washed and drained poha. 
  10. Add ginger green chilli paste to add spice to your Green pea poha | Matar poha . You can adjust the spice level as required.
  11. Add salt to taste and also add sugar to balance off the spice and add a little sweetness to the Matar poha.
  12. Add lemon juice to the Green pea poha | Matar poha and salt to taste. The lemon juice gives the poha a nice tangy and fresh taste.  
  13. Add milk to give it a soft texture. Adding milk is optional to the Green Pea Poha. You can add little water if you wish to.
  14. Mix well and cook the matar poha recipe | green pea poha | healthy matar poha | on a medium flame for 2 minutes while stirring occasionally. 
  15. Add the coriander to Green pea poha | Matar poha 
  16. Serve matar poha recipe | green pea poha | healthy matar poha | hot with a cup of Masala chai.

Thick Poha is healthy and has a nice mouth feel. Combined with a bit of potatoes and minimum oil the recipe has 18% fat level which is boarder line high. Tasty and the lime ads a nice tanginess to the poha. I have it often for breakfast.
