Ingredients


For Tomato Onion Chutney
1 cup finely chopped tomatoes
2 tsp oil
1 tsp chana dal (split bengal gram)
1 tsp urad dal (split black lentils)
8 curry leaves (kadi patta)
2 tsp finely chopped green chillies
1/4 cup finely chopped onions
1/8 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
salt to taste
1 tsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
1 whole dry kashmiri red chilli , broken into pieces

For Serving With Tomato Onion Chutney
idlis or dosas or uttapas

Method

For tomato onion chutney

  1. To make {span class="bold1"}tomato onion chutney{/span} , heat the oil in a non-stick pan, add the chana dal, urad dal and curry leaves and sauté on a medium flame for 1 minute or till the dals turn light brown in colour.
  2. Add the green chillies and onions and sauté on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  3. Add the tomatoes and 2 tbsp of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  4. Add the turmeric powder and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  5. Allow it to cool completely and blend in a mixer till smooth. Keep aside.
  6. Heat the oil in a small pan and add the mustard seeds.
  7. When the seeds crackle, add the red chillies and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds.
  8. Remove from the flame and pour on the chutney and mix well.
  9. Serve the {span class="bold1"}tomato onion chutney{/span} immediately or store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator with idlis/ dosas/ uttapas.
